What are they ? |
A domain name represents an IP address for a wesbite. An IP address is a technical way of saying a numerical address. Every website's address is in fact a bunch of numbers. For example; a website's address might actually be 106.10.41.810 but it is represented by a "Domain Name" let's say called "AGreatWayToStart.com". The whole URL (or Uniform Resource Locator - whole address) would be http://www.AGreatWayToStart.com but the actual domain name is just the name plus the suffix or ending (.com, .net, .org, .tv, .us). |
Why do I need one ? |
You need a domain name if you want a website OR if you come up with a good name you may want to use for business or personal use in the future. Domain names are like pieces of cake at a birthday party; there is only so much left and then you are left with the crumbs. Are all the "so called" good names are gone? Not really but most are. If you are creative and spend some time at it, you will find a good name. |
How do I get one and how much does it cost ? |
You go to a domain name registrar and type your desired name in the empty text box they will have on their website. They will tell you if it is available. They sell for as low as a few dollars (per year) and go as high as $35 to $50 (per year). A name ending in .com or .net (suffix) shouldn't be more than $15 per year. |

How many can I own ? |
You can own as many as you want. But remember that you will have to renew your name(s) every year. You can pay for a five or ten year term but if you buy 200 names, just remember they will expire unless you renew |
How long do I own it ? |
For as long as you want (almost). Some registars allow you to pay for up to ten years and more. if you can afford it, that is the way to go sos you won't have to pay for renewal fees every year. |

What can I put on it ?
You can put just about anything you want on it. Many hosting companies will have rules against a hosting a site that encourages violence, racism, or hate-filled speech. But apart from that, you can put video, music, your diary (blog), news, jokes, family pictures, items for sale, information for sale, and even nothing but blank space if you want. It's your site. Do whatever you want. |

As many people as you want (just about). If you want to have a private site that only family can view, you can have a password so that only family can enter with the right password. If you want the world to see it, you can make it public by submitting it to as many search engines as possible and market your site as much as possible. |

Here you would either need to have a basic understanding or HTML, a basic understanding of some sort of HTML software (like Dreamweaver or Frontpage) OR you would need to have your web designer do all your updates. |
